Volunteers from wilko and Keep Wales Tidy, supported by staff from Bedwas Trethomas and Machen Community Council, have been getting down and dirty in Bedwas this week, taking part in a litter-pick to help create a sustainable community garden.

The team spent two hours cleaning up the woodland area, opposite Bedwas High School, ahead of a community consultation and the redevelopment of the site. They collected 46 bags of rubbish weighing 200kg, as well as two sofas, a mattress and a garden statue.

The partnership between wilko and Keep Wales Tidy is part of the retailer’s Together for Communities programme, which will see up to £1m invested over the next year to aid community projects and build a more sustainable future. The team also hopes to create a garden which will achieve a Green Flag Community Award.

The other partners in the programme are Keep Britain Tidy and The Prince’s Trust.

Mark Hale, Supply Chain Director, said:

At wilko we exist to free up hard working families to be the best they can be, and helping the communities we operate in is vital to this.

It’s been great to get to work in Bedwas and working towards transforming the old bus depot into a sustainable community garden, which we know will become a core destination within the community once the work is complete.

I’d like to thank all of the volunteers who took part in the litter-pick – it’s not the most glamorous Tuesday afternoon activity but is vital as we look to redevelop the play area.

Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive, Lesley Jones said:

We’re proud to be part of the Together for Communities programme and would like to thank wilko for their ongoing support. These vital funds enable us to help volunteers care for their local environment and transform areas for everyone to enjoy.

We’re delighted to be working with so many different people, groups and organisations in Bedwas. Together, we’ll create a fantastic garden that will be a real asset for the whole community.
