Margam Country Park in Neath Port Talbot has been named as one of the UK’s favourite green spaces.

In 2020, more people than ever have come to see the benefits of visiting our parks and green spaces. So, it is perhaps not surprising that tens of thousands of people took part in the vote to find the country’s ten best Green Flag Award-winning sites.

The Green Flag Award scheme is the international quality standard for parks and green spaces, and this year a record-breaking 2,061 achieved the award in the UK.

During November, the public were invited to vote for their favourite and more than 59,000 did just that.

The People’s Choice ten most popular parks and green space are (in alphabetical order):

  • Cassiobury Park, Watford
  • Hollycroft Park, Hinckley
  • Margam Park, Neath Port Talbot
  • Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London
  • Strathaven Park, South Lanarkshire
  • Telford Town Park, Telford
  • University of Essex Wivenhoe Park, Colchester
  • Valentines Park, Ilford
  • Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets
  • Warley Woods, Smethwick

Margam Country Park is one of Wales’ premier green spaces, boasting the magnificent Margam Castle and Orangery, ornamental gardens and a deer park, set in 900 acres of beautiful countryside. It has held the Green Flag Award for the past eight years and has also achieved Green Heritage Site Accreditation.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, Cllr Peter Rees, said:

This is wonderful news for Margam Country Park. It is a great accolade to be the only park in Wales to have achieved the People’s Choice Award and to be one of just ten in the whole of the UK. I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers of the park who work tirelessly to maintain the castle grounds on this magnificent estate as their help is invaluable.  Margam Country Park is such an important landmark both for our local residents and visitors and this award shows just how much people value it. I would also like to say a very big thank you to everyone who voted for Margam Country Park.

We deliver the Green Flag Award scheme in Wales with support from Welsh Government.

Keep Wales Tidy’s Green Flag Award Coordinator, Lucy Prisk, said:

The number of people that have taken the time to vote for their favourite Green Flag site shows how much high-quality green spaces have been valued by our communities this year. For many of us, they have been a haven on our doorstep, benefitting our health and well-being. Congratulations to all of the staff and volunteers at Margam Country Park who have gone the extra mile to maintain its excellent standards and make it such a wonderful place for people to visit.
