Chewing Gum is defined as litter in the law but local authorities are not legally obliged to clean gum staining. This means that many instances of chewing gum staining are around for a long time as the synthetic product can take up to five years to break down.

Keep Wales Tidy works with local authorities, chewing gum manufacturers, businesses and partners such as GumDrop to promote responsible littering behaviour and encourage innovation in gum removal.

You can read our Policy Action Paper on Chewing Gum here which includes examples for best practice and innovative solutions.
