The Green Flag Award scheme for parks and green spaces continues to go from strength-to-strength in Wales, with the announcement that Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, is endorsing its Green Heritage Site Accreditation.

Environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy has today announced Cadw’s support for the accreditation which recognises sites that are both historically significant and meet the high standards needed to achieve Green Flag status.

Funded by Welsh Government, the Green Flag Awards are judged by green space experts who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.

After another record-breaking year, flags are now flying over 183 of Wales’ best parks and green spaces, including three Green Heritage Sites – Bute Park in Cardiff, Belle Vue Park in Newport and The Great Orme in Conwy.

Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism said:

I’m delighted to support the Green Flag Heritage Accreditation Scheme, which helps promote and preserve the magnificent historic environment we have on our doorstep here in Wales. Working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, this will help ensure sustainability remains at the heart of what we do, allowing future generations to continue to enjoy the abundance of unparalleled parks and green spaces which are so crucial to our heritage.

Keep Wales Tidy and Cadw will be working together to identify sites of local or national interest.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said:

Keep Wales Tidy is delighted that Cadw have endorsed the Green Heritage Site Accreditation – it marks another exciting moment for the Green Flag Award scheme.

We’re fortunate to have so many wonderful historic parks and green spaces in Wales. I’m looking forward to working with Cadw to tell their stories and celebrate the efforts of the staff and volunteers who are helping to preserve our country’s heritage.

Applications for Green Heritage Site Accreditation are now open. Any Green Flag site that is of local or national historic interest, or contains features of historic interest can apply.
